Chris took Christiana and the younger three kids to the Neuberg Museums while Elora played with a friend. We love the inside of the building. It is beautiful just to walk around. The museums inside are great, with musical instruments, armor, and archeological finds from Ephesus.
First trip to Prater Park! It is a beautiful place to ride bikes or explore. Everyone loves the big swings and playgrounds! After a nice afternoon, everyone went on one ride at the amusement park before heading home.
Public transit fun!
After church one week we took a walk through the Volksgarten to see the beautiful roses.
In the middle of Volksgarten is the Theseus Temple where there are art exhibitions. We went to see the current one, which is a sculpture of stone grapes. The kids liked looking at it and even brought home a poster so we can enjoy looking at the sculpture at home.
We took a walking tour of downtown. We have a fun booked called Vienna for Kids that has several different walking tours that teach interesting tidbits about the city. We learned a lot of little pieces of history and some legends about different buildings we walked by.
As part of our walking tour, we climbed to the top of the South Tower of St. Stephens Cathedral. The kids have always wanted to go up. Marion and James were a bit nervous about going back down. We have gone up the north tower before with an elevator, and it is actually much better for views of the city because you can walk around outside on top of the tower. At the south tower you climb up the stairs and end up in a gift shop where you can look out tiny little windows. It was fun to climb all the winding staircase, but I would definitely recommend the north tower if you only want to go up one.
After our walking tour we stopped by Cafe Demel to try out some delicious pastries. I love seeing their beautifully decorated cakes. One of the pastries was decorated with flower petals that the kids were excited to try. They didn’t taste very yummy, but the pastries were delicious.
We took the kids to the Rathaus Film Festival to see the kids version of the Magic Flute. The general consensus was that it was actually harder to understand than just watching the long one because they used narration in German to abridge the play instead of just leaving out parts of it to make it shorter. It was still fun to watch and nice to be outside on a cool summer evening.
