Pioneer Day

Last summer for Pioneer Day we decided to enter the parade. We made some props to put on our truck to turn it into a covered wagon.
The theme was “Faith in Every Footstep” so I had the kids help me made a nice paint footprint covered banner. Luckily our basement wasn’t finished yet, so we got to walk around with paint on our feet inside the house. Marion wanted no part of the paint on the feet fun.
I made little bonnets for me and the girls and aprons for the girls to wear. I was making up the pattern, so I was pretty pleased that they actually ended up looking like bonnets.
Here is our nice covered wagon.
And I drew oxen for the front. Chris came up with the slogan…
Oliver played his violin while we drove in the parade and wore his super cute lederhosen.
This was our first time as a family in a parade. The kids really liked throwing the candy to everyone who was watching.
James had the race thing all figured out from the Fourth of July and had a great time running.
Marion was really excited to race, much to our surprise. She usually doesn’t take direction well, but this time she was happy to participate.
Oliver had to skip in his race.
Elora had to do potato sack racing. Then they let anyone potato sack race. I did it with Oliver which was pretty fun.
Water balloon tossing was another fun game.
There was a watermelon eating contest, but Elora didn’t want to rush. She just sat and enjoyed her watermelon next to the other people who were wolfing theirs down.
These cute kids had so much fun playing together at the community dinner.
Since we couldn’t shoot off fireworks on the Fourth of July with all the rain, we got to shoot them off on Pioneer Day. The kids were super excited, we have never shot off our own fireworks in Glendale before. We had a fun time and it was great to remember and honor those who sacrificed so much in coming to Utah. I am glad they did. The communities they established down here in southern Utah are still full of some pretty awesome people.
