Gardening

Our garden is now in full bloom – I love this time of year when we finally get to eat the fruits of our labor! The kids have been really excited to help out with the garden, and especially to eat items from our garden. Our pumpkins turned out really well this year – we used the first ones to make pumpkin soup and pumpkin muffins. Yum!
Tomatillos! We made some green salsa with these and it was so good. We made enchiladas that frightened the kids. I guess the green salsa will be a treat for me.
Elora loves our huge corn. She always chooses to weed “in the shade of the corn”. We have been enjoying eating corn with every meal. Sometimes there are strange combos, like the enchiladas with corn on the cob, but it tasted good to me!
Elora with our green beans. We have frozen four gallon size bags of beans and still had plenty to eat.
Oliver loves to pick the peppers. Doesn’t eat them, but for some reason this is the only vegetable he picks.
Here is our small corn that Oliver was showing me. Strange that it also has ears of corn that have been eaten, and yet it is half the size of the other corn. Which begs the question, why does the corn get so tall?
Elora is a huge helper in the garden. Every day she goes through to pick vegetables. She also loves to eat everything from the garden – she has gotten to try some new things from our garden. It is one of the best ways we have found to get our kids to eat veggies!
Elora with our huge cucumbers. Here she is saying, “WOW!” We have enjoyed our huge garden this year. And are already making plans for a bigger and better garden next year!
The kids found a grasshopper (always an exciting occurance in our yard even though they can find one every day if they look). Here is Oliver hopping like a grasshopper.
Elora finally caught it and as you can see, she was quite pleased. They named the grasshopper Om and kept chasing it around the yard saying, “Here Om! Come here Om!”
