Remise is Oliver’s favorite museum. He loves trains, buses, and all public transit and says they are the reason why he wants to live in Vienna forever. We had a free ticket on our Niederösterreich Card which expired at the end of March, so I took all the kids out on a windy day to see the museum.
I love this outdoor “station” where we stopped to enjoy a snack while the kids enjoyed playing on the strassenbahn.
The Remise museum chronicles the history of public transit in the city of Vienna which is super interesting. There are many stations with old pictures and a lot of great information in German and English to read about how public transit developed in the city. The kids don’t read everything unfortunately, so I had a hard time reading as much as I wanted and keeping up with the kids who just wanted to run around and see all of the old trams and buses.
James loved this station where he could put together a wooden model of a strassenbahn and play with it for awhile. He waited until the big kids had moved on to look at something else so he could play with it without anyone else there trying to take it away from him. Smart boy.
I loved this old embroidered flag. It has such intricate details!
The best part for the kids was getting to pretend to drive a real u-bahn. Once again, here is James after the big kids had left and moved on. There is another room where there is a video game simulator that you can try out. The kids like to drive too fast in the simulator and then couldn’t figure out why they got a short turn. If you try to drive the simulator properly, you get a much longer turn. Only Elora was patient enough to figure that out.
I love this museum because it is inside of an old station. The large halls are fun for the kids to run around in, there are lots of cool stations with photos, models, and other interactive activities, and a lot of fun trains to look at. It is a great place for little kids and I learned a lot of interesting facts along the way! The hardest part about this museum is walking through the amazing gift shop with all kinds of public transit games, memorabilia, legos, and toys without buying anything! I love all the items in the shop. I think we need to have a Christmas shopping spree for Oliver in the shop at the Remise!
