We were supposed to go swimming with a friend today, but James has a double ear infection and the older two kids are pretty tired from fighting off colds. I didn’t want Marion to be disappointed, so she got to pick which museum to spend the afternoon at, just her and Mommy.
Marion could not decide! So many wonderful museums to choose from! She finally settled on the Kunsthistorisches Museum, probably because it was the first museum we could see from the bus. I don’t get a lot of one on one time with Marion, and it was so fun for her to be able to choose what to see and where to go! She loves these big lion statues at the museum. She was even “dressed as a kitty” today, right down to her kitty socks, so she wanted to pose with the lion.
After visiting the cat mummy in the Egyptian section, we headed over to the Kunstkammer, which houses valuable items from the Renaissance to Baroque period that the various members of the Habsburg imperial family collected. Marion loved this set and declared, “Wouldn’t you love to have a tea set like this one? And wouldn’t you love a bathtub that looks like this?!?”
She also wants a clock like this one. She loved looking at all the beautiful items. There is quite an amazing collection of items carved out of ivory, which were hard to take pictures of. Marion asked what every item was made of, and was amazed when most of them were gold or ivory or crystal. She did not like it when she realized what ivory is made of however.
After exploring all the treasures, Marion wanted to check out a few paintings. She decided to draw her very first unicorn. She didn’t want it to be white because then she wouldn’t get to color it, so she made a rainbow unicorn.
Next she drew a swan, because she likes the big banners that are hanging up about a painting of Leda and the Swan. Since the painting is actually quite small, we sat on the comfortable couches and drew a picture of a swan while looking at one of the banners. It was such a lovely afternoon. Marion was so happy and energetic, and once she was done looking around was excited to head home and see everyone. As a bonus, here are a couple pictures we took at the ZOOM museum earlier in the week.
Marion got to stay home from school to head over to the ZOOM Museum Exhibition on Seeing and Hearing this week. She was pretty excited to hang out with the big kids. I didn’t take many pictures, we just had fun exploring together, but the kids love to take pictures with all these silly accessories. I love all the great museums near us!
