We went to the ZOOM Museum and checked out the new studio exhibit – Colors, Colors, Everywhere!
The Studio is my favorite section in the ZOOM Museum. There is always lots of mess to be made and it is so amazing to see what the kids create. This time it was all about colors. They sat in a circle and talked about how in the studio there are only the primary colors and all other colors have to be made. I loved the way it was set up. They created different “rooms” in the studio and each room only had two of the primary colors along with white paint. If the kids were in the room with blue and yellow paint and wanted to make orange, they had to clean up their paint and go search for the room with red and yellow.
James loved painting. He loved mixing new colors and exploring each room. I mostly followed James around since he was the only kid who needed my help. I was impressed by how well he did at figuring out how to make the colors he wanted. He was also excited to try new mixtures to find out what would happen.
Marion loved painting as well. She painted a beautiful cat and enjoyed exploring each room to make all the colors she needed. I was impressed that she remembered all the instructions about cleaning up the paint before changing rooms. She precisely cleaned up exactly how they showed her in the circle at the beginning, without any prompting. If the kids made too much paint, they would pour the extra into bottle lids and set them on a tray to dry and then wash out their brushes and boats. She was so independent and excited to try out every room and every activity in the studio, cleaning up as she went. If only the kids would do this at home…
There was a really fun section where the kids could create with wax. There was a spot to create different colors of liquid wax to pour and create with on a flat surface and another area where the kids could make three dimensional items out of wire, fabric, popsicle sticks, etc. and dip those creations in wax. Oliver just loved dipping his hands in the wax so that he could look like Luke from Star Wars when he had a robot hand. He was delighted to discover that he could pull off the wax and it kept the exact shape of his fingers. James loved being able to use scissors and dip popsicle sticks in wax, and Elora of course impressed us all by working diligently to find new ways to create and came home with some lovely flower made of wire, fabric, and wax that she shared with all of us.
Elora is holding one of her flowers and posing near some of the paint creations. She made several paintings that she distributed throughout the room.
At the end of the session, the kids got to pick out their own dried paints. This was the paint that the kids had put in bottle lids in previous sections. When they dry they can be used as watercolors. Every child got to pick out four or five colors and stick them on a cardboard sleeve that they could keep as their very own watercolor set. The kids were SO excited about this and they each picked their own color palette to bring home. This was another great activity at the ZOOM museum. We love it there!
