Christmas is my favorite time of year, and even more so in Vienna. I love all the Christmas markets, the lights, the yummy food, warm drinks, Christmas music, and especially the Christmas ornaments!
Our first market was the Rathaus market one cold night. I love the ornament stands here and was able to find a star for the top of our Christmas tree! Seeing the Rathaus and market all lit up at night was so beautiful.
One morning while the little ones were in kindergarten, we took Elora and Oliver to the Belvedere market. The Belvedere Palace is so beautiful. We didn’t buy any ornaments or trinkets here, but we did really enjoy the Langos and BIG creme filled donuts!
I love the Freyung market. There were a lot of beautiful items here and Marion picked out a candle and a lovely glass angel ornament for her kindergarten teachers.
The Karlsplatz Market is another of my favorites (who am I kidding? They are all my favorite!) The Karlsplatz market sells handcrafted artisan items. They are all beautiful and it is so fun to look around here. There is also a fun area for the kids with animals and hay to play in. But best of all, there are Bauernkrapfen which are a type of fried bread with various toppings and SO YUMMY!
I took the kids to see the market at the art museum. It is a beautiful place for a market and I found some hand carved wood ornaments I really liked. Elora bought herself a monogram stamp that she has been using to seal letters and mark her artwork ever since. The kids really liked the waffles with nutella on them.
The Spittalberg Market is right by our apartment, so we walked through it a couple times. It gets really crowded at night, but the kids enjoyed getting some snacks and picking out Christmas gifts while wandering through the streets and alleyways!
The Schönbrunn Market is wonderful. The scenery is great, but most of all, I like the ornaments at this one the best and purchased several for our tree. We found a lot of great treasures here and also some really good food. The kids tried a couple new kinds of spaetzle, which is one of our favorite foods, and we had fun walking around together. It was a bit cold, so we let the kids warm up at the treat making workshop!
Oliver decorated cookies while the girls made marzipan angels. The kids were so proud of their creations! James opted to hang out in the stroller and rest since he was worn out from all the walking.
On the way home the kids made friends with this great painting!
We love Christmas time in Vienna and are so grateful we could spend time at the markets with the kids. They don’t remember spending Christmas here before, so this was a really special year for them to rediscover how magical Vienna is at Christmastime!
