All over Austria there is a big event called Lange Nacht der Kirchen where all the churches in the country hold concerts and other activities late into the night. As there is a cathedral on every other block in Vienna we took the kids to a couple of them nearby our apartment.
Marion has wanted to go inside this church since we moved here, so it was good she finally had the chance.
The First Cathedral we went to had an orchestra and a choir who were practicing for a concert that was to take place later that night, but we sat and listened to them practice for about 20 minutes.
Once the kids started squirming around we decided it was time to get up and look around so that’s what we did.
Normally a lot of the doors are closed in the churches, but on this night they were open so you could poke around. At least that’s what we thought. So we decided to walk up this winding staircase not knowing where it went or if we were allowed to do so; the kids thought that was a lot of fun.
After we left the church we noticed the side door open on the outside so we walked in through the side door and it took us right next to the orchestra which was pretty cool.
We walked a couple blocks down to the next Church on Mariahilferstrasse, and listen to a choir sing Jesu ist meine Freude by Bach. It sounded exactly like that.
Finally, the kids were doing such a good job that we decided to have Gelato at our favorite place around the corner. Marion ordered something new and got peach gelato, while Elora and Oliver debated if they should get something new or stick with their favorites. The favorites won out; cookies for Elora and Lemon for Oliver.
