This was a really neat place to visit, but having tried it now I think I could do a better job of picking out which exhibits to go see. It was hard for the little kids because they couldn’t go on everything, and I wasn’t sure which things were best for kids. So if you choose to go to Kennedy Space Center with kids, the bus ride is long, but really interesting and it takes you out to the building which houses all the memorabilia about the moon which was my kids’ favorite part. The IMAX is cool, but the movies are long, so James couldn’t sit through it all. The older kids loved it though. There are a lot of outdoor spaces to just look at things and also a playground for when the kids want to just run around. And I would skip the Angry Birds exhibit, it was very crowded and really had nothing to do with space at all, it was just a place to distract kids, only my kids didn’t enjoy that part all that much!
Kennedy Space Center
We took to the kids to Kennedy Space Center. I went when I was Elora’s age and I still remember how neat it was. The kids really enjoyed looking around, especially Elora and Oliver.
With all the neat rockets, space shuttles, moon rocks, space suits, and more to look at, I thought it was funny how long Grampy and the kids looked at the fountain.
The kids loved sitting inside all the different shuttles and capsules.
There is a really neat bus tour where you get to see the launching pads, the NASA building, and also we saw alligators. Marion was so excited about the alligators she didn’t talk about anything else the rest of the day.
This space shuttle is so large they had the build the building around it.
Elora was fascinated by everything. She was so in awe of every exhibit. She says she would love to be an astronaut, except for the taking off part. That sounds too scary!
The kids really enjoyed the re-enactment of the landing on the moon. They kept asking me if it was real and if it really happened!
So we went to touch a moon rock to show that astronauts really went to the moon and brought back moon rocks.
The kids loved this fountain. The ball on top of it shows the constellations in the night sky, and it spins in the water. The kids played here a long time, and Marion sailed her rubber duck in a space shuttle that she picked out at the gift shop.
James zonked out on the bus ride back and Oliver thought it was fun to hold him for a minute. Then Oliver informed me that James was too heavy and I should hold him instead.
There was a really cool space station play area. The clear tube the kids climb in is about 30 feet above the ground and it is clear, so they can look down. Elora got really scared and had to climb out really fast because she is scared of heights, but Oliver and Marion had a great time crawling around in the space station. When they finished there is a super fast slide that the kids can ride down to the bottom floor of the building.
I wasn’t sure how the day would turn out, but in the end I am glad that we went. The kids really loved exploring and it was awesome to explore in a place that teaches them about real places and real space shuttles and astronauts. The older kids were really excited about it. I am glad especially because Elora our little explorer had a really great time and saw a glimpse of some of the amazing things people have done in our history. I remember feeling that same excitement and awe when I came as a kid and I am glad we got to let Elora experience those feelings too.
