Driving Across the Country!

Last October we all hopped in the truck and drove across the country with Chris when he headed to Florida for work. It was quite the interesting experience, but I am glad we went. James loves to drive and I think his skills improved by the time we got there!

Oliver learned the very important skill of how to use the self check-out at Walmart. He was so proud of himself! I love how things that I think of as a chore are so exciting for the kids because they are fun and new. Oliver felt so grown up.

Here is James kicking back and enjoying the view as we crossed the bridge over the Mississippi River.

The whole drive Elora kept asking when we would cross the Mississippi River. She has read about it and really wanted to see it. When we finally got there it was so amazing! We had to stop and get out so we could look at the river and explore.

The kids were really excited to see the big bridge we drove over and also how wide the river is!
There are some cannons at the visitors center and of course the kids had to climb on them.

When we drove across the country we didn’t stop much, and this was a great place to take a longer break. The view was beautiful and the weather was perfect. I am glad we got to look around here. I remember coming to the Mississippi River when I was seven years old and it was fun to come back as a parent with little kids excited to see it.

And no drive across country would be complete without some really awesome traffic somewhere. I think this was in Louisiana. I can’t remember. There was a lot of driving. We had the great experience of having trouble with the trailer in Mississippi. When we noticed the trouble, we luckily found a U-Haul place within a couple miles who referred us to a trailer repair place within a couple miles. The people at the trailer place started working on the trailer right away and the cost was reasonable and we were on our way within a couple hours. I am grateful for this time when things went wrong, but really things went pretty right.
Marion was dancing to entertain herself in the car. We were also grateful for satellite radio which brought us endless music and Elora discovered that Elvis radio is her very favorite. The kids also learned to pay attention to which hotels we stayed at and all of them had their preferences. Quality Inn ended up being their least favorite for some reason.  All kinds of self discovery on this trip…
