Mighty Missouri Battleship Tour

We went to the library every week in Hawaii and the kids picked out Piggie and Gerald books every time we went. If you have never seen them, go find some. They are so funny that sometimes I can’t keep reading because I even start laughing. The kids LOVE them, and Oliver can memorize them (or read them, we are not sure which, he does both a little…) so the kids are always reading them to each other. This is one of my favorite Hawaii moments – Elora reading Oliver a story and hearing them both laughing out loud the whole time.

We went on a tour of the Mighty Mo Battleship. We started out with a tour group, but the kids got bored, so we ended up just walking around. Probably missed out on some good information, but we had a great time exploring.

Oliver was very impressed by the big guns on the battleship.

Elora loves audio guides, so she ended up with ours. It became too much trouble to stop and listen at every place on the ship though, so mostly we just explored.

Oliver decided to try out some of the smaller guns.

Marion saying, “Look at these big chains!” They are for the anchors. The kids thought that was pretty awesome that the anchors are so big.

Little James. Such a good baby, always just hanging out with Mom wherever we go.

Elora posing with her audioguide and this super large shell.

The battleship is like a small city. There are 5,000 or so people who live on board. Here is a picture showing the crew. It is crazy that so many people could live and work on a ship together.

The kids liked exploring the skinny halls, lots of doors and compartments, stairs, ladders… so much fun for our little explorers.

Marion loved these red lights because they matched her shirt. She would stop at every one and hold her shirt up to them.

Look at those huge soup kettles. I thought the kitchen the most interesting part.

Here is the mighty grocery list. Holy cow, that is a lot of food.

The kids liked the little bunk beds. Hard to imagine grown men sleeping on these tiny bunks.

Look how small the sleeping quarters are!!! Reason enough to be an officer who gets his own room…

Narrow, steep ladders and stairs everywhere! A lot of fun while holding a 20 pound baby.

There was a really beautiful view from the top decks of the battleship. Oliver was a little bummed that he was not allowed to play with the steering wheel.

View of Pearl Harbor.

I didn’t think we would need much time here because I figured it might not be that much fun for the kids, but we stayed for only an hour and it flew by. The kids loved it and we had to rush them a bit to see the whole thing before it closed. Next time we will plan on more exploring time! This was probably one of their favorite places in Hawaii.
