If you aren’t sure what a kebab is, you must have missed our Vienna blog. But it is a fantastic food we ate in Vienna that consists of really great meat that you eat on flatbread with various different things on top. We have been wanting to make our own, and when it was time to supply our own dinner for our family reunion’s picnic in the park, Chris decided this would be a good time to try it.
Chris thought adding bacon would make the meat taste better, because you know, there can never be enough bacon in your diet.
Chris ground up the bacon and dark meat from chicken, and made it into patties.
Then he layered the dark meat patties with thinly sliced breast meat.
Seasoned up the top with various spices…
Meanwhile, I made pitas (which turned out awesome, and they are so easy. Love it!!!)
We headed down to St. George, and brought a bunch of dutch ovens. Meat in one with peppers and onions on top, potatoes in another, and peach cobbler in another.

When Chris cut the meat it just shredded apart, just like a real kebab! Chris dubbed his version the Cowboy Kebab since he cooks it with bacon in a dutch oven. I think I might like it even better than the original!
Pita with mean, tomatoes, lettuce, potatoes (that’s the way they make them in Greece, is with the french fries, and it really adds something!), and yogurt. It was totally awesome!!! We tried it another time with pork (so NOT a variety you would get in Vienna) and it was also super good.

Grandma and Grandpa drove up for the reunion along with some of my aunts, uncles, and cousins. The kids just came for the ice cream.
Elora found this rose, and Grandpa thought he should show her the proper way to hold it!
Oliver thought he should polish off the rest of the ice cream. Gotta love that kid, he always goes for the whole tub.
Great Grandma with Marion and Elora. There was a swimming pool at the hotel everyone was staying at, so we came down to go swimming with the whole family before dinner. I wish I had taken a picture, it was pretty awesome to see the whole pool filled with my relatives.
The kids hanging out and watching tv after swimming. It was so cute to see Oliver with his cousins and his feet up in the air just like theirs. After relaxing for a little while we met the whole family over at the Golden Corral (and once again I took no pictures). It was nice to catch up with some of my cousins and aunts that I don’t often see. I wish the reunion could have lasted a little longer so I would have had more time to visit with everyone!
On the way home we saw some Mountain Sheep right outside our car window. The kids were soooo excited, this was their first time seeing them.
We thought we would do the tourist thing and stop right in the middle of the road and let our kids hang out the window to see the sheep. They thought it was pretty cool, but they were talking and laughing so loud they soon scared the sheep away. You can see them running off in the background.
