We picked the hottest day of the week to go hike around in Zion, but notice Amanda still wearing a sweatshirt. She gets cold easier than any girl I know! But we had a great time hiking around. All the kids excited and ready to explore and find some petroglyphs!I love coming to hike in Zion. There are a lot of places that are still uncrowded even in the summer time that are relaxing to hike around in.Oliver sporting Elora’s baseball cap. He loves wearing it at home since he is excited to play ball next year, and I was excited he agreed to wear it so his head wouldn’t get sunburned. The kids love tunnels, and they enjoyed this small one that goes under the road. Elora is pretending to carve petroglyphs on the tunnel walls with a rock. She thinks it is so neat to see pictures that the Indians wrote “a long long time ago”.Here we are at the petroglyph site. These were carved by Anasazi Indians who lived here in Utah about 1000 years ago. The Anasazi Indians were wiped out about 600 years ago and no one knows what they actually called themselves. Anasazi means “Enemy” in the Navajo language. Notice the fence. I am bummed, because that has been put up in the last couple years while we were in Europe. Not many people come to this site, but apparently the park decided that enough come now that they want to block the petroglyphs with a fence. I get that they don’t want people to touch the carvings, but I don’t like having a fence blocking me from getting a good look at things that are interesting!Marion enjoyed crawling around and trying to eat sand, rocks, and sticks.Oliver is relishing his cookie that we brought for a snack.Elora was really much more interested in the whole petroglyph thing than Oliver. He just wanted to run around and explore, Elora however is fascinated with all things old. She thought this rock looked like it had a carving on it.By this time it was getting really really hot, so we started hiking back. It’s funny how much longer hikes seem when you have hot and tired children with you…Elora hiking back toward me to tell me she is too tired to walk to the car (she was almost there and it cracked me up that she came all the way back down the hill to say she couldn’t hike anymore!)Oliver with his cousins. The kids love having Amy and Amanda here to visit, we wish we saw them more often!
